Best Sports Books

These are a few of my favorites, please email me yours.

Summer of '49, David Halberstam
I can't say enough about this book. It not only captures the best pennant race of all time, Joe Dimaggio's Yankees against the Red Sox of Ted Williams, but the essence of an era long gone. After reading this book I wished I had been born earlier so that I could have enjoyed that season. The 2003 Yankee-Red Sox race, as well as 1978, were ones for the ages. But 1949 was so special.

Boys of Summer, Roger Kahn
Life and times of the Brooklyn Dodgers. This has been called by some the greatest book concerning sports ever written. If it isn't, it must be next in line for the title.

King of the World: Muhammad Ali and the Rise of an American Hero, by David Remnick
Ali has always been one of my heros, more for his courage is refusing the draft than his boxing skills. If he had not had four of his prime years taken away from him waiting for the Supreme Court to overthrow his conviction, I don't think he would have had the problems he's had later in life. He fought too long, after his skills had deteriorated and he took too many punches. I don't believe that Alie would have fought so long had he been fighting those four years.

The Mick, Herb Gluck
There are a lot of good Mantle books out there. This one is my favorite. I think the reason that so many of us, even non-Yankee fans, loved Mantle was his courage and class. He once played in a World Series when blood was seeping through his uniform. Can you see any of today's Yankees doing that? Money doesn't buy heart, it doesn't buy courage, it doesn't buy indomitable will. That's why a team loses a Series in six games to a team inferior in experience and skill, but a team who believes in each other. The Marines call it esprit' de corps.
