How stupid is it to require people filing bankruptcy to pay $75 for pre-bankruptcy counseling?
It seems that the new bankruptcy laws REQUIRE that you get a certificate from an approved company proving that you have undergone counseling. This certificate must be turned in with the filing paperwork. From what I've been able to find, the fees for this average around $75.
If you are destitute, there is a form you can file to request the filing fee be waived. So, you might not have to pay the $125 filing fee but you have to pay for counseling? Brilliant!
What are they going to tell me? I could not find a job for two years until I finally settled on a phone room job that pays a third of what I made a quarter century ago - with no benefits. Are they going to have suggestions on how to better handle money I don't have?
By the way. it appears that Clark County Legal Services MAY offer free classes for bankruptcy counseling but they don't return calls.
If anyone know where one can obtain a better deal on the required counseling, please let me know.
