Book review and Commentary: Contempt: How the Right is Wronging American Justice, Catherine Crier (2/26/2006)

This book ties in with my Big Brother editorials well. After how, how can a Big Brother society exist with a Bill of Rights in place? And make no mistake about it, the extreme right is trying to erode the Bill of Rights. We perceive their agenda is to overturn Roe v. Wade; in actuality, it goes far beyond that. Ms. Crier, a former prosecutor, makes her case and presents the evidence well.

And she is no bleeding heart liberal; she was a DA and the youngest judge ever elected in Texas. She has skewered sacred cows on both ends of the political spectrum.

I wish every registered voter in America would read at least the first chapter of the book. I really cannot believe that most Americans support the radical right in their quest to erode our rights. They will not be happy until we have a theocracy like Iran; only their brand of Christianity instead of Islam.

If you don't read anything else, take a look at pages 8-10. Enumerated are the Bill of Rights as they would read if the right's agenda is carried through. You will think it extreme and not credible, the product of someone's imagination who had an ax to grind. But Ms. Crier presents evidence from their own mouths and pens to show that this is exactly what this well-financed zealot minority is after.

I hope it isn't too late. With the appointments of Roberts and Alito, the Supreme Court may prove to be the most radically conservative it has ever been. Even more distressing is the number of activist conservative District Court judges appointed during the last decades. A Republican controlled Senate blocked Clinton nominees; he would have to appoint someone distasteful just to get a chair filled. Of course Bush has had no such problems - which is one more reason why this Fall's election is so important. I plan on working to get Jack Carter elected to Senate in Nevada and send the Bushite Ensign home; I urge you to work for Democratic candidates, especially in the Senate, so as to at least put a roadblock in front of Bush.

It is interesting that the right complains about "activist" judges; Crier points out that their favorite judges are much more active; for example acting as if separation of church and state is "just a fiction."

I know I've made some statements here that may seem outrageous. Well, I'm not going to regurgitate the book here to prove the point, pick it up at the library or buy it on Amazon and read the truth for yourself.

That is, if you are still capable of independent thought . . .
