If I remember correctly, an article in Computerworld last year indicated that starting salaries for newly graduated Computer Science majors were in the $40,000-$50,000 range.
I recently completed the exams required for the Master CIW Designer certification. I have been looking at the job sites for potential positions and noticed something interesting.
I found a lot of positions looking for senior developers and Webmasters with a long laundry list of requirements. These jobs often included Java as well as HTML, JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets, and server administration. Many of these positions are advertised in the $35,000-$45,000 salary range or as low as $18/hour for contractors.
I realize there are a lot of "dot-goners" out there right now, but are experienced Internet professionals really getting less than newly-minted graduates? That just doesn't seem right. If so, then my obsolete COBOL skills are worth more that my new Internet skills.
