Jack Nicholson

I'm not sure if anyone has played the lead in more great movies. Drama, comedy, or mixture of both, Jack can do it all.

Carnal Knowledge (DVD)
(1971) Close to a ground-breaking film in my opinion, explores the sexual history of two men. This movie pretty much cemented Nicholson's reputation as a great young actor, on a par with the young Brando. Of all people, Art Garfunkle (yes, of Simon and Garfunkle) plays the "more solid" of the two men. Ann-Margret has a nude scene (I believe one of the first by a major star) displaying a magnificent arse. However, this is a dark film, more about how people use each other than anything else. Like a great work of literature, its a film you appreciate more the older you get . . . and the more women you go through.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (DVD)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (VHS)
(1975) Winner of 5 Oscars, including Best Actor for Nicholson. This is one of those rare films that may be even better than the book. Nicholson's performance has been rarely equaled and never surpassed.

As Good As It Gets (DVD)
As Good As It Gets (VHS)
(1997) Everyone in this movie was great. Should have won Best Picture over that over-hyped FX flick about a big boat. I do NOT like romance films but this had comedy and drama. Even though you will probably not identify yourself with anyone in the film, you will feel empathy for them all. You will laugh and cry with them, and you can almost smell the fresh bakery at the end. I never though of Helen Hunt as sexy at all until I saw this film. Greg Kinnear and Cuba Gooding's supporting performances do much to make this the classic that I believe it will become. (Guys, if your significant other doesn't have this, it will make a great gift that you can enjoy together.)

The Shining (VHS)
The Shining (DVD)
(1980) Nicholson shines (sorry) in this adaptation of King's novel.

A Few Good Men (Special Edition DVD)
A Few Good Men(VHS)
(1992) Star performances from 3 true stars: Nicholson, who really only has a cemeo role, Demi Moore, in one of her best performances, and Tom Cruise, who may have been better in 4th of July but not by much.

Batman (DVD)
Batman(VHS)
(1989) Michael Keaton co-stars as the cave dweller. Nicholson steals the show as The Joker. The only Batman movie worth watching, much less owning, although I must admit Alicia Silverstone was quite fetching as Batgirl. Oh, and Uma was in that movie. Never mind.

Chinatown (VHS)
Chinatown (DVD)
(1974) Faye Dunaway was up to the task of co-starring with Jack in this detective drama.

Easy Rider (VHS)
Easy Rider (DVD)
(1969) Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda are amazing starring, but Nicholson has an important supporting role. One of the films defining the sixties generation, the message is just as relevant today. Do you think the Bush era is any less tolerant than the Nixon regime? Why is it that those who wrap themselves in the flag, have so little respect for the freedom of others?

Five Easy Pieces (DVD)
(1970) Demanding character study of a man trying to run from his past.

Goin' South (VHS)
Goin' South (DVD)
(1978) In this Western comedy, Nicholson is saved from hanging by an old maid who puts him to work in her gold mine.

Hoffa (DVD)
Hoffa (VHS)
(1992) Nicholson portrays the life of the union boss. Fairly accurate historically except for Danny DeVito's composite character, some critics feel this is Jack's best work - which is saying a helluva lot. You probably missed this and should at least rent it, especially if you are a blue collar guy.

The Postman Always Rings Twice (DVD)
The Postman Always Rings Twice (VHS)
(1981) Tale of adultery and murder gone wrong, much more explicit than the '46 version. Features Jessica Lange as the wife. Sexier than XXX crap, watch this with someone you want to (or are) making love to.

Wolf (DVD)
Wolf(VHS)
(1994) I must confess I like even bad horror films. (I mean, I even enjoyed the An America Werewolf in . . . flicks.) But this is my favorite werewolf movie ever, as mild-mannered Jack is bitten and transformed, taking revenge on his bitch of an ex and his publisher. If you don't like these kinds of movies normally, you might like this one.

Anger Management (DVD)
(2003) Funny stuff with Adam Sandler.

Born to be Wild - Four High Octane Movies (DVD)
(2001) Where else will you find four entertaining movies - if you love fast cars - for this price? You won't find any of his Oscar performances here, just great guy flicks. Let the bitch go out with her friends and have a good evening with your buds watching this!

Somethings Gotta Give (DVD)
(2003) Once in a while they actually make a movie for people over 25. As Good as it Gets was, and this definitely is targeting the older demographic. (meaing anyone out of college, in California terms.) This is not Easy Rider by any means, but it is an entertaining romantic comedy. Jack plays a guy (himself?) who only goes for women younger than he is, but falls for the Diane Keaton character - who is then courted by Keanu Reeves. Film purports that romantic/sexual reawakening can occur in late middle age. Entertaining notion, but I ain't buyin' it.

The Departed (DVD)
(2007) One of the best films of 2006, maybe the best. Great cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen.
