Job Sites

headhunter.net

www.Dice.com

This started primarily as a resource for contract software professionals to locate their next jobs. It has expanded to include more "permanent" jobs (as if there is any such thing in today's Delbertian corporate culture) as well.

www.ceweekly.com

If you are a contractor, it doesn't matter if you are software, CAD, EE, etc., you will find national openings from the best contracting companies here. Contract Employment Weekly offers a lot of services with a paid subscription to their weekly (surprise!) magazine. The letters from fellow contractors and tax advice columns are worth the subscription price. They now offer the option of a Web-only subscription.

Real Rates
This is a must site for contract software developers. Find actual hourly rate information online. I strongly recommend you order their book, which contains the rate information broken down in just about every way imaginable. Make sure you're getting what you deserve and that out-of-state agency isn't trying to screw you.

Travel

National Park Service
I like to spend a lot of time at National Parks. Every American should see the Grand Canyon; it is one of those things that cannot be appreciated without being there. I finally went to the Everglades in December 1998; like the Grand Canyon, it is something unique in the entire world. I recently fulfilled a life-long dream of visiting Monument Valley, a Navaho Tribal Park; it is spectacular. Forget Europe until you've at least visited those destinations.

Jetsetters Magazine
Are you a jetsetter? Do you want to be? Great articles and tips here for the frequent, or not so frequent, traveler.

Web Development

I maintain this site myself, and the following sites (as well as the books on the Book Reviews page) help a lot.

NoteTab
I hate WYSIWIG editors. Homesite seems to be very popular among HTML coders, so I evaluated it but I could see no reason why I should pay $95 for an HTML editor when I can get NoteTab, which I actually prefer, for $15 (at least, that's what it was when I got it a few years ago.) And no, I'm not getting paid a dime if you link there and buy it - I just think it's a good product at an unbelievable price and the author should be rewarded.
