Favorite De Niro Flicks

We are blessed to have so many outstanding actors appearing in so many wonderful movies. When it comes right down to it, isn't it really difficult to find even a hair's difference between the talent of Nicholson, Pacino, Duvall, and DeNiro?

Hide and Seek (2005)
The young Dakota Fanning steals the show in this spooky drama.

Meet the Fokkers (2005)
I continue to be amazed at how well De Niro does comedy. This movie may be even funnier than the original, with the addition of Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand as the Fokkers.

Meet the Parents (2000)
Ben Stiller is to meet his future father-in-law; an apparent psycho played to perfection by De Niro.

Analyze This(1999)
A very funny film, sort-of goofing on the Godfather movies. De Niro plays a depressed mobster seeking help from a psychoanalyst. Billy Crystal co-stars.

Once Upon a Time in America (Two-Disc Special Edition (1984)
Follows the lives of two Jewish kids who become gangsters. James Woods costars.

The Robert De Niro Collection (Analyze This/A Bronx Tale/Goodfellas/Heat/Wag The Dog) (1999)
Four great movies showing his talent and range.

Taxi Driver: Special Edition (DVD)
Taxi Driver: Special Edition (VHS)
(1976) Jodie Foster plays the young prostitute; De Niro attempts to be her guardian angel. Features a great performance by DeNiro directed by Scorsese.

Extreme Adventure Gear

Raging Bull (Special Eedition DVD)
Raging Bull (VHS)
(1980) Scorsese again directs De Niro, who plays a boxer struggling against his inner demons. Another dark, unforgetable film from this team. By the way, ever notice how many great films are about someone trying to overcome their inner demons rather than an external foe?

Heat(2-disc Special DVD)
Heat(VHS)
(1995) Pacino and De Niro in their only appearance together. Pacino is a detective in the trail of De Niro. Final scene is worth the price of admission. Character study and action in one outstanding film. I hope these two are reunited soon.

Angel Heart (DVD)
Angel Heart(VHS)
(1987) The outclassed Mickey Rourke stars in this mildly entertaining vehicle that has some interesting moments. De Niro plays a cat named Louis Cypher out to collect an old debt.

Awakenings (DVD)
(1990) Robin Williams co-stars (was this his first dramatic role?) as the real-life Doctor who discovers that L-Dopa will revive some comatose mental patients. De Niro plays one of the patients who awakens after 30 years in a coma. Highly recommended, even for non-psych majors.

Bang the Drum Slowly (DVD)
Bang the Drum Slowly (VHS)
(1974) My favorite baseball movie, a young DeNiro plays a terminally-ill catcher trying to get through the season. This might be the best movie, or at least the greatest acting performance, that you've never heard of.

The Godfather II (DVD)
The Godfather II (VHS)
De Niro portrays the young godfather-to-be. Pacino also appears separately in the film; they do not appear together until Heat.

Casino 10th Aniversary Special Widescreen Edition
Casino (DVD)
Casino(VHS)
(1995) Guess who? directs again in the story of the mob's involvement in Vegas. Sharon Stone shows she can act.

Cape Fear 10th Anniversary Special Edition DVD
Cape Fear(VHS)
(1991) Yet another dark Scorsese film that many critics think is overblown. De Niro stars in this remake as a serial rapist out to get revenge on his attorney.

Good Fellas (2-disc Special Edition DVD)

(1991) Scorsese directs this masterpiece, based on the true story of a real-life mobster. Joe Pesci became a star because of this film. A little trunk music, anyone?

Netflix

Mean Streets (DVD)
Mean Streets (VHS)
(1973) This was Scorsese's first film as a director where he could make the kind of movie he wanted and it marked him as a talent. Began his productive partnership with De Niro. Many consider this to be the first of a gangster trilogy, with Good Fellas and Casino following.

Wag the Dog (DVD)
Wag the Dog(VHS)
(1997) De Niro is again the master, this time as a political consultant who masterminds the faking of a war to distract attention from Presidential scandal.
