The Apostle (DVD)
(1997) I knew people much like the ones in the film growing up. Yes, it is very realistic. Farrah Fawcett is outstanding as his wife.
Tender Mercies (DVD)
(1982) Duvall won an Oscar for his performance as a drunken washed-up country singer. A very good, but apparently little known, film features his best performance with the possible exception of The Apostle.
A Civil Action(DVD)
(1999) Travolta gives us a good performance as an attorney involved in a personal injury suit. Robert Duvall steals the show as the opposition. Highly recommended.
Apocalypse Now (DVD)
(1979) Francis Ford Coppolla's Vietnam epic features Duvall as the ultimate bad-ass warrior, almost as looney as Brando's character. You're probably familiar with several phrases from this movie, including "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."
Deep Impact (DVD)
(1998) One of the two asteroid summer "blockbusters," Duvall is the "old fart" on the team of astronauts sent to save earth. An enjoyable couple hours with Duvall's usual on-the-money performance. Morgan Freeman impressed as the President.
Falling Down(DVD)
(1993) Michael Douglas stars as an engineer outsized out of his job and somehow ending up on a crime spree. Duvall is the detective who figures out the geek did it. Interesting subplots revolving around the detective's marriage and retirement decision. If you've ever been in a relationship with a woman who tried to control every aspect of your life, you'll empathize with the Duvall character. If you have felt the effects of downsizing, rightsizing, outsourcing, etc., then you'll feel some of the engineer's pain. If you've been through both - like me - you won't be able to watch it more than once. But that once . . .
The Godfather DVD Collection (DVD)
The Godfather (DVD)
The Godfather II (DVD)
Outstanding in support of Brando and Pacino.
The Great SantiniDysfunctional family study; Duvall is amazing as an overbearing Marine who has no enemy to kill so gives his kids hell instead. |
