Tom Cruise

I used to say that I did not really like Tom Cruise. However, when I consider the number of quality films he has starred in, such as Born on the Fourth of July, I have to admire his growing body of work.

This movie was an unexpected pleasure. Cruise plays a cavalry officer who goes to Japan as a consultant to their military, which is trying to modernize. The Samurai have been declared illegal, but through a series of events the young officer ends up on their side and learns the meaning of honor.

War of the Worlds (2005)
Another remake that was better left alone. The FX are of course better, but the 1953 version is more true to the H.G. Wells novel. Maybe I'm cranky because he was one of my favorite authors in my early teens and I don't like people screwing with what is already great. Sorry Spielberg.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Co-starring with then-wife Nicole Kidman, another psychological journey into the darker corners of the psyche from master Kubrick. Tom's Doctor character goes to an invitation-only orgy uninvited, and Nicole's character is having erotic dreams about other men.

A Few Good Men (Special Edition DVD)
(1992) Star performances from 3 true stars: Nicholson, who really only has a cemeo role, Demi Moore, in one of her best performances, and Tom Cruise, who may have been better in 4th of July but not by much.

Born on the Fourth of July (DVD)
(1989) Stone's second Vietnam movie covers the true journey of Ron Kovic from patriotic support of America's war involvement to outspoken war protester after seeing the horror himself. Tom Cruise was nominated for Best Actor; I believe it's his best effort to date.

Collateral (2004)
A change of pace for both Cruise and Jamie Foxx. Cruise stars as a hit man instead of the good guy, Foxx has a dramatic role as his cab driver instead of a funny guy.

Risky Business (1983)
Still funny today, an instant comedy classic. The train scene with Rebecca De Mornay is memorable.

X10 Home Security System

Mission Impossible III (2006)
I'm not a big fan of the MI moveis, but I know many who enjoy them.

Top Gun (Widescreen Special Collector's Edition) (1986)
Does the character arch of this film - from young smartass pilot to seasoned professional - parallel Cruise's acting career?

Rain Man (1988)
Another classic, this one co-starring Dustin Hoffman. Cruise plays the younger brother who at first is only interested in Rain Man because of money. A touching story.
