My Favorite Las Vegas Movies

These movies all feature Las Vegas from the darkness of Leaving Las Vegas to the humor of Honeymoon in Vegas. (Interesting that both starred Cage?)

Leaving Las Vegas (1995) DVD
My favorite Cage movie, my favorite Vegas movie, one of my all-time favorites, period. A very dark drama, not for those only interested in feel-good film. Cage gives an amazing performance as an alcoholic who finally reaches the end of his line after losing his wife, his job, and everything else. He goes to Vegas with his severance pay intending to drink himself to death. He is befriended by good-hearted whore Elizabeth Shue, who gives the performance of her career. A realistic portrayal of alcoholism (I was in love with one once,) star-crossed love, life in general and Vegas in particular.

Casino (DVD)
(1995) Reunion of the Goodfellas tells the story of how the mob acquired and then lost control of Las Vegas.

Ocean's 11(DVD)
(2001) George Clooney and Brad Pitt remake might be even better than the original.

Lavalife.com

Ocean's 11(DVD)
(1960) Original starring Sinatra and the Rat Pack.

Viva Las Vegas (DVD)
(1964) Elvis and Ann Margret in Vegas of the sixties. A fun movie, maybe the best of Elvis on film.

Honeymoon in Vegas (1992) DVD
Co-starring Cage, Sarah Jessica Parker and James Caan, a film more than worth the price of admission. Featuring flying Elvi's, comedy, romance, and Ms. Parker in a skimpy little bikini.

The Cooler(DVD)
(2003) I had never heard of this movie, but picked it up at the library when I couldn't find anything else to watch. Alec Baldwin does a great job playing the villian, running the last mob-owned casino. Maria Bello is sexy as hell, William H. Macy gives his usual performance. The plot is improbable, the ending is ridiculous, but somehow it is a fun film.
