My All Time Favorites

Casablanca (VHS)
Casablanca (DVD)
Bogart and Bergman. Heros and villians. Love story in an exotic locale. Reclamation of a man's soul. The movie equivalent of a Hemingway novel plus some great one-liners - maybe the best screenplay ever written.

Gone with the Wind
Who could forget Scarlett and Rhett?

The Unforgiven(DVD)
The Unforgiven(2 disc Special Edition DVD)
The Unforgiven (VHS)
(1992) Gene Hackman perfectly portrays a corrupt lawman, blatantly displaying abuse of power throughout the film. Retired gunslinger Eastwood picks up his revolvers again to seek justice for those who have no hope of justice - for a price. Even if you ignore the symbolism and metaphor - which many I know somehow manage to do - it is one great story. If you do not watch Westerns, but care about the general unfairness of life (do you like Les Miserables?), then try this one out.

Leaving Las Vegas (1995) DVD
Leaving Las Vegas (1995) VHS
My favorite Cage movie, my favorite Vegas movie, one of my all-time favorites, period. A very dark drama, not for those only interested in feel-good film. Cage gives an amazing performance as an alcoholic who finally reaches the end of his line after losing his wife, his job, and everything else. He goes to Vegas with his severance pay intending to drink himself to death. He is befriended by good-hearted whore Elizabeth Shue, who gives the performance of her career. A realistic portrayal of alcoholism (I was in love with one once,) star-crossed love, life in general and Vegas in particular.

American Beauty (1999) DVD
American Beauty (1999) VHS
Kevin Spacey deserved the Oscar for this performance. A satiric dramatic look at how screwed up marriage and everything else is in American Society, punctuated by moments of hilarity that only accentuate the hopelessness of finding happiness in this society.

A Christmas Carol Alistair Sim version
A Christmas Carol George C. Scott version
There are many versions of this great Dickens classic. I also like the TV movie version starring Henry Winkler; it may have been called An American Christmas Carol, but I only saw it once ages ago.

Straw Dogs, Hoffman
Story of man protecting his home and his woman.

The Scent of a Woman, Pacino and Chris O'Donnell
Great "guy" movie of a young preppie in crisis meeting a bitter middle-aged man and how they changed each other's lives.

Terminator 2
They study this one in film classes. Great screenplay and incredible Fx that advanced the art.

Full Metal Jacket, Mathew Modine
My favorite Vietnam movie. Parris Island was EXACTLY like that and yes, Marines sang Mickey Mouse while walking "in line." It just felt right.
Vietnam movies

The Godfather Part I,Brando
The Godfather Part 2,Deniro & Pacino

The Godfather Part 3,Pacino

As Good As It Gets, Nicholson and Hunt
Would have had my vote for best picture 1997. These are real people with real problems, not a BS love affair that would never happen in 1912.

One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest,Nicholson

The Wizard of Oz

Bang the Drum Slowly,DeNiro
My favorite baseball movie of all time.

Other Noteworthy Films (VHS)

Chinese Box,Jeremy Irons and Gong Li
A well-written and directed film. Besides, Gong Li is incredible.

The Titanic
Despite my earlier allusion, incredible Fx make accepting the plotline worth the hard swallow.

Face/Off, Cage and Travolta (DVD)
Face/Off, Cage and Travolta (VHS)
A new take on the old story of good vs. evil. Travolta plays an FBI agent, Cage is the worst type of psycho criminal; they end up with the other's face. Great action with psychological overtones; supporting cast all do a fantasic job.

In Love and War, Sondra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell
Hemingway and his nurse. If you love the man's writings as I do, you should see this movie.
